I painted this pretty passionflower on the fence between me and my neighbor. Her beautiful gardening brightens up our backyard. So I painted it as a little moment of mindfulness for myself, and a little thank you to her.

I dropped it off at possibl
Coffee shop roundup! Does Sacramento have the best cafes for urban sketching? Yes, yes it does.

While I was sketching this, a mother and daughter passed by. They told me they had planted the garden I was sketching! And they said they wished they could see the finished piece.

Later, I wished I had grabbed their contact info. But months later,
I’m determined to get braver and better at sketching during shows. It can be intimidating! And hard to sketch in the dark.

Also, it’s pretty cool that LabRats share their jazz/hip hop fusion for free every Sunday @thetorchclub. Their Su
Nature illustration class @crockerart challenged me to pay attention to small details in a way I normally wouldn’t. Having the time and the permission to stare at a flower for two hours helped me to really, truly look. It also encouraged me to
I had so much fun picking flowers for free (!) at a family farm near Woodland. My friend @caraemiliaart and I painted on location for about an hour before getting hot and picking our bouquets. I appreciate the generosity of @mezger_family_zinnia_patc
I’ve been looking for free spaces to sketch because I spend so much time in cafes. The library is quietly revolutionary. I love the peacefulness of the Ella McClatchy Library’s reading room. It feels like a living room away from home.

As a sketcher, nothing beats a public transit journey. I love to bike to the Amtrak, sketch on the train, and explore the East Bay. So many opportunities for sketching, even if the train gets delayed.

I love the creative community @artclubsacramento. People are warm, welcoming and supportive of one another. We share ideas, materials, events and opportunities. I appreciate it when creative communities are not competitive — but instead collabo
When I shared the first sketch with the people in it @mastcoffeeco, the man said, “That’s fire!” And we exchanged names. The other said she has been wanting to keep a sketchbook, and I told her to go for it! One of the sweeter thing
The stranger I was painting walked by and said “That’s amazing!” And I responded, “You can tell that it’s you, right?” His jaw dropped. His friend teased, “Don’t make his ego even bigger than it is!&rdq
Sketcher Fest taught me to loosen up and just go for it. The more you draw, the less scared you are of the blank page. It also taught me that the urban sketcher community is collaborative and supportive — and they make you feel like less of a w
One of the big (and adorable) themes of Sketcher Fest for me was sketchers sketching other sketchers! We were often sitting around in groups drawing each other. It was a delight to spot myself in other people’s drawings and see myself through t
My morning workshop with @jeg_er_domee was so uplifting. She did a great job of giving us permission — to leave disembodied limbs and overlap people as they move, to create composite characters, to make mistakes because there are no mistakes. I
I shared this sketch with the two lovebirds and they were so happy! I shared with them that I knit and my partner plays video games, too. I love the sweet connections from urban sketching.

Thank you @christinawald_art for an awesome class on narrati
When I shared this sketch with the people in the drawing, they were surprised and excited. They snapped a picture of the sketch. It’s scary to show people that I’ve been sneaking on them! So far, it has always felt like a wholesome connec

I ran out of ink for my favorite fountain pen, and it was a happy accident. I think I prefer the look of the ghostly white gel pen people.

Two days till Sketcher Fest Edmonds!

I used to keep my sketchbooks private. Then, I shared this with the barista at @corocoffee and she jumped up and down. I had honored her art with my own. I’ve decided to start sharing my art to make connections and build my community. I’m
